History of D&R Custom Steel Fabrication

John DeWit Yke Reitsma
D&R was established on May 1, 1971 by John DeWit (D) and Yke Reitsma (R). Both John DeWit and Yke Reitsma were immigrants from the Netherlands and had gained valuable experience working for steel fabricators in Canada prior to setting up D&R. John DeWit retired in 1982. In 1983, Harry Oldenhof, a came on board to become Yke's new partner bringing with him his strong engineering background. In 1984, the company was moved from its old location on Woodbine Avenue in Markham to a new building at the present location in Pickering.

In 1987, Charlie Reitsma (son of Yke) also an engineer joined D&R as a partner in the company. Yke retired in 1996 but continued working part time for the company until his full retirement in April, 1998. Fred Engelage joined D&R in 1998 and became a partner replacing Harry Oldenhof who retired at the end of 1999 bringing with him experience in both national and international business trade.

D&R continues to grow employing in excess of 60 persons. A strong focus on custom steel fabrication with a particular focus on environmental products such as water, air and sewage treatment equipment as well as vibrating conveyors has provided D&R with strong steady growth. In addition, strategic partnerships with several Canadian and USA based design/engineering companies has ensured continuous work opportunities allowing for minimal fluctuations in staffing levels.

D&R continues to grow and flourish due to a company wide commitment to meeting our customer's needs. We believe that if we can satisfy our customers with quality products we produce at a competitive price, they in turn will continue to provide us with their fabrication requirements. This attitude has been and will continue to be a key factor in the way we do business at D&R.
